About the role
Camp Deeny Riback | JCC MetroWest
Location: West Orange and Flanders, NJ • Full-time, year-round
Camp Deeny Riback (CDR) is looking for an Assistant Director who loves building great teams and creating memorable camp experiences. CDR serves more than 500 campers, ages 3 through entering 10th grade, and employs more than 200 seasonal staff members. Our inclusive day camp is grounded in Jewish values, community, and connection to Israel.
The Assistant Director leads seasonal staffing, staff training, and camp programming. During the summer, this person is a visible leader throughout camp: supporting staff and supervisors, keeping programs running well, and helping solve the challenges that come with a busy camp day.
What You Will Do
• Recruit, interview, hire, place, onboard, and retain seasonal staff. Build relationships with colleges, community partners, camp alumni, and staffing agencies.
• Plan and lead pre-camp orientation and ongoing training. Coach supervisors on staff development, feedback, and performance concerns.
• Oversee programming across age groups and specialty areas, including theme days, special events, trips, and Jewish camp experiences.
• Supervise the Program Assistant, seasonal program leaders, and designated year-round part-time staff responsible for programming, family communication, camper enrollment, and staff onboarding.
• Spend time throughout camp observing activities, getting to know campers and staff, supporting program quality, and identifying needs early.
• Manage daily staffing coverage and work closely with Camper Care, Health Center, Operations, Aquatics, and program teams.
• Build relationships with families through tours, Open Houses, community events, and summer communication.
• Help evaluate each summer and turn feedback into improvements for the following year.
• Assume leadership responsibility when the Camp Director is unavailable.
What You Bring
• Approximately 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in camp, youth programming, recreation, education, or a related field.
• Experience supervising staff; recruiting, hiring, and training employees; and developing programs.
• Strong communication, organization, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of child and adolescent development and a commitment to inclusive experiences.
• The ability to manage details and systems while remaining approachable, energetic, and present in camp life.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn CampMinder and other systems.
Experience leading a camp team, working with international staff, or developing programs across multiple age groups is a plus. Experience in Jewish camping or Jewish communal work is welcome but not required.
