CONGREGATIONAL RABBI
Temple Israel of Vestal, New York
Temple Israel, a vibrant, egalitarian synagogue rooted in Conservative Jewish practice, seeks a rabbi to partner with our lay leadership and congregation as we enter our 15th decade of Jewish life in Greater Binghamton.
We are a community of approximately 160 member families with a long history, a strong tradition of lay participation, and a commitment to meaningful Jewish practice, lifelong learning, pastoral connection, and an inclusive communal life. We are seeking a rabbi who will bring deep Jewish learning, warmth, creativity, and spiritual presence to our community while helping us imagine and build the next chapter of Temple Israel's life.
About Temple Israel
Temple Israel was originally established as Congregation Sons of Israel in 1866 and has been part of the Greater Binghamton Jewish community ever since. Today, we are an egalitarian congregation whose members value Jewish tradition while seeking ways to make Jewish life spiritually meaningful and accessible to people across generations and backgrounds.
Our congregation is fortunate to include many members who are knowledgeable and active participants in Jewish life, including congregants who regularly lead services, read Torah and Haftarah, teach, serve on committees, and contribute to the life of the synagogue in many other ways. We see our rabbi as a partner in cultivating this lay leadership and helping members discover meaningful ways to contribute their gifts and interests.
Temple Israel has an active Board of Directors and a range of engaged committees, including Caring and Adult Education. We value a collaborative relationship between clergy and lay leadership and seek a rabbi who will strengthen that partnership.
About the Position
We seek a rabbi who sees the rabbinate as a partnership between clergy and community. Our ideal candidate will combine strong Jewish learning with warmth, pastoral presence, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to egalitarian Jewish practice.
The rabbi will help Temple Israel:
• Deepen Jewish prayer and spiritual life through thoughtful leadership of Shabbat and holiday worship, inspiring Divrei Torah and sermons, and collaboration with congregants who participate in davening, Torah reading, and other aspects of worship.
• Provide pastoral care and rabbinic guidance to congregants of all ages, including visits and support during illness, bereavement, and other significant moments, while connecting individuals and families with appropriate professional resources when needed.
• Celebrate the Jewish lifecycle by preparing and participating in b'nei mitzvah and providing rabbinic leadership for funerals, shivah, weddings, baby namings, and other significant occasions in the lives of our members.
• Cultivate lifelong Jewish learning , developing and teaching engaging opportunities for adults and supporting members in deepening their knowledge, practice, and connection to Judaism.
• Provide rabbinic vision and leadership for children's and youth education , in partnership with lay leaders, teachers, and educational staff.
• Strengthen congregational relationships and participation , helping members build meaningful connections to one another and to Jewish life and creating opportunities for people to participate according to their interests, abilities, and stage of life.
• Cultivate lay leadership , partnering with committee chairs and congregants to identify opportunities for meaningful volunteer engagement and shared leadership.
• Represent Temple Israel in the Greater Binghamton Jewish and broader civic community , building relationships with other Jewish institutions, interfaith partners, educational institutions, and community organizations.
• Work collaboratively with Temple Israel's Board, committees, staff, and volunteers to help develop and implement a shared vision for the congregation's future.
We recognize that effective rabbinic leadership requires time for study, preparation, pastoral care, family, rest, and professional development. Temple Israel is committed to a sustainable model of congregational leadership and to establishing clear expectations around the rabbi's working schedule, Shabbat and holiday responsibilities, vacation, professional development, and coverage during periods of absence.
Dedicated time for Jewish learning, sermon preparation, and professional development is understood as an integral part of the rabbinic role.
The Rabbi We Seek
We welcome candidates whose rabbinic formation has taken different paths and who bring a range of experiences to the rabbinate. We are particularly interested in a rabbi who:
• Has strong Jewish learning and the ability to communicate Torah with clarity, depth, and warmth;
• Is comfortable leading egalitarian worship and engaging seriously with Jewish tradition;
• Approaches pastoral work with empathy, humility, discretion, and appropriate boundaries;
• Enjoys teaching learners with a wide range of Jewish backgrounds and levels of knowledge;
• Values collaboration and shared leadership rather than seeing the rabbi as the sole center of congregational life;
• Can develop relationships across generations and foster a welcoming environment for individuals and families;
• Is creative and willing to experiment while remaining attentive to the traditions and practices that are meaningful to our members;
• Brings initiative and imagination to congregational life while listening carefully to the community;
• Is committed to building relationships within the wider Jewish community and beyond.
Most importantly, we seek someone who will enjoy getting to know our members, learning with us, celebrating with us, accompanying us through difficult moments, and helping us grow together as a Jewish community.

The area includes three congregations representing Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Judaism, as well as Chabad, Hillel, OU JLIC, the Jewish Federation, Jewish Family Service, Hillel Academy, and the Jewish Community Center.
