Executive Director

About the role

SAJ, the founding congregation of the Reconstructionist movement and home of America's first Bat Mitzvah, seeks a mission-aligned Executive Director for its Upper West Side community of 260+ households. The ED is the synagogue's senior administrative leader, carrying forward the vision of the Rabbi and Board into daily operations. This is a public-facing, primarily on-site role that combines business hours with Shabbat mornings, evenings and holidays.

Responsibilities: • Oversee office systems, calendars, internal processes and communications, and supervise staff • Manage all revenue cycle functions, including budgeting, dues, payroll and expenses, in partnership with the Treasurer • Steward SAJ's 100+-year-old building and physical plant • Work closely with the Board Chair and Executive Committee, build relationships with congregants, and serve as SAJ's ambassador to outside entities

Requirements

• 5+ years of relevant experience managing operations and supervising staff or volunteers
• Demonstrated financial management ability
• Collaborative leader who builds strong relationships in a community-facing environment
• Familiarity with the rhythm of Jewish life, including Shabbat, holidays and life-cycle observances
• Comfort with modern workflow and communication technology; real estate or facilities experience a plus
• Salary: $135,000-$155,000
