About the role
PART-TIME YOUTH GROUP LEADER
Dix Hills Jewish Center | Dix Hills, New York
4–6 hours per week, early evenings, plus one Sunday per month
ABOUT DIX HILLS JEWISH CENTER
Dix Hills Jewish Center (DHJC) is a vibrant, full-service Conservative synagogue serving families in western Suffolk County. We are rebuilding our youth programming to create an engaging, welcoming community where children and teens form friendships, develop leadership skills, connect with Jewish life, and feel at home at DHJC.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We seek an enthusiastic, creative, and dependable Part-Time Youth Group Leader to help relaunch and grow our youth program. Beginning with grades 3–7, the Youth Group Leader will develop fun, creative activities and build momentum toward a renewed teen program for grades 8–12, with opportunities to participate in USY. This is a hands-on role for someone with warmth, energy, and fresh ideas. College students and recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Plan and lead age-appropriate social programs, games, themed events, and informal Jewish experiences that feel distinct from Hebrew school.
• Build a welcoming environment where participants develop friendships, a sense of belonging, and positive connections to synagogue and Jewish life.
• Coordinate programs for third graders monthly; grades 4–5 on alternating Wednesdays, approximately 6:30–7:30 p.m.; and grades 6–7 on alternating Mondays.
• Help develop occasional Sunday programming and special events.
• Partner with synagogue leadership to recruit participants, communicate with families, promote events, and encourage repeat attendance.
• Collaborate with a second adult staff member or approved volunteer to maintain required two-adult supervision at all programs.
• Coordinate simple refreshments or dinners and program supplies within an approved budget.
• Seek opportunities to involve teen leaders and occasional guest facilitators, including Israeli shinshinim when available.
• Help lay the groundwork for a grades 8–12 program and connections to USY by the Fall of 2027
• Track attendance, gather participant and parent feedback, and report on program progress.
SCHEDULE AND COMMITMENT
Approximately 6-8 hours per week in the early evenings, plus one Sunday per month, with the precise schedule coordinated around the youth calendar. The initial program launch is targeted for January. Some planning, outreach, and event preparation will be part of the role. Scheduling and responsibilities may evolve as participation grows.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
• Energetic, approachable, organized, and genuinely excited to work with children and teens.
