This is a unique opportunity for a rabbinic student who also is musically inclined (ideally playing guitar) that is looking for a long term home. Our Rabbi, who has a national reputation and presence, has asked us to find an intern who would be able to eventually move into a full time position after ordination.
The internship responsibilities include the following: helping lead services; bnai mitzvah tutoring (for which they get additional tutoring fees); building a larger presence with young families, leading services when the Rabbi is out of town; and helping officiate High Holiday services. There is currently a musical director and part-time cantor/song leader, and this position would take over those duties of the latter of playing/singing at services along with our Rabbi and Musical Director. We typically have 3 friday night services and one saturday morning service per month, and observe Festivals as well... so this position does not require an inordinate amount of time... but it does require a personal commitment.
The goal is to have an intern that will develop into a junior partner who will be guided by our Rabbi, become the Junior Rabbi after ordination, and ultimately become the Senior Rabbi for the community when our Rabbi becomes emiritus. We also would like to build our religious school, and are willing to give significant bonuses to the intern for doing that.
Our synagogue is in a suburb of Los Angeles, and is post-denominational: we use the Conservative siddur and mahzor; have live music as an integral part of our liturgical experience; and our Rabbi teaches authentic Judaism, utilizing traditional texts (he is a well known author and speaker). We were the only temple in California to remain fully open during Covid: we streamed services who wanted that, and provided live services, classes, and High Holiday services for those who wanted to attend. We are inclusive, welcoming to all Jews; and extremely pro-Israel.
You must be personally committed to joy, depth, text, learning, and Israel.
This is ideally the start of a lifetime journey, and so we are taking our time to look for the exactly right person. Although we are currently thinking of a rabbinic intern, it is possible that a cantorial student or Cantor could also be a good fit, and we are open to that possibility as well
