South Jersey Basketmaking Traditions

For two hundred years, South Jersey baskets did the region’s hard work. They carried strawberries to the train, hauled charcoal out of the Pines, and lifted the day’s catch from the bay.

Master folk artist Mary May spends a one-day residency at Richwood Academy. In the morning, twelve participants ages 15+ will build a traditional South Jersey berry basket from start to finish, with all materials supplied.
